CPHS holds White Coat Ceremony for the Class of 2014The Doctor of Pharmacy class of 2014 took the first step to becoming pharmacists during the tradition-honored White Coat Ceremony at Campbell University College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences (CPHS) on August 8 in Turner Auditorium. One hundred and eight new students were presented with a white coat symbolizing their entry into the pharmacy profession.
Campbell to consider adding a medical schoolThe Campbell University Board of Trustees voted Wednesday, Aug. 4, to authorize a feasibility study to consider the establishment of a College of Osteopathic Medicine, beginning with a charter class in August 2013.

Applications are being accepted for Physician Assistant programThe application process is heating up for Campbell University’s new Physician Assistant (PA) program to be launched in August 2011. Program Director Thomas P. Colletti, MPAS, PA-C, said the program has already received 35 applications for 32 available slots.
Campbell continues to expandThe face of Campbell University continues to change for the better with over $10 million in new construction and renovation projects currently underway. The projects include the construction of a new residence hall, new science laboratories, renovations to existing science labs, the renovation of Kitchin and Baldwin dormitories, the conversion of Wiggins Hall into a state-of-the-art main campus library, and the enhancement of the campus landscape with more green space, plantings and brick monumentation.

Campbell pharmacy graduates volunteer in Haiti field hospitalSome feel a call, others are driven by principle, but Nishan Gunawardena was driven by his concern for his wife’s safety when he joined a group of Campbell University pharmacy graduates who volunteered to care for earthquake victims in Haiti. Nishan (’10), Gail (’08) and two other Campbell University Pharm.D. graduates Roger Reeder (’10) and Megan Lockamy (’10), arrived in Port-au-Prince, Haiti on May 1.

Campbell Physician Assistant program receives $100,000 grantThe Campbell University College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences Physician Assistant (PA) program, set to launch in 2011, received a $100,000 grant from The Cannon Foundation, Inc. for the construction of a new facility. Currently in the programming and design phase, the new PA building will contain 13,000 square feet with specialized laboratory spaces, classrooms, office space and breakout rooms. Construction is expected to begin this spring with an anticipated completion prior to the start of classes for the first group of PA students during the summer of 2011.
Campbell Launches Continuing Education Web PortalCampbell University College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences recently launched a Web portal that allows pharmacists to more easily earn their mandatory 15 hours of continuing education credits. Campbell Pharmacy Students to offer health information at upcoming eventWith some assistance from Campbell University’s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, participants at Erwin’s second annual Earth Day Celebration will not only be educated about going green, but also making healthier lifestyle choices. On April 17 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. the College of Pharmacy will host five different booths to increase health awareness at the Cape Fear River Park through Campbell’s Operation Inasmuch.
Chapel garden and fountain dedicated to late professor The picturesque garden and fountain on the grounds of Campbell University’s new Anna Gardner and Robert B. Butler Chapel was dedicated Sunday, April 11, in memory of Dr. Lewis M. Fetterman, Jr., a popular professor of pharmacy in Campbell’s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. The Lewis M. Fetterman Jr. Memorial Garden was given by Fetterman’s parents, Annabelle Lundy Fetterman and Lewis M. Fetterman, Sr., longtime friends and benefactors of Campbell.
Campbell professor to lead free diabetes workshopDr. Jennifer Smith, assistant professor with Campbell University’s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and a clinical pharmacy practitioner with the Wilson Community Health Center, will lead a free workshop for people with diabetes on Tuesday, March 30, at 2 p.m. at the Benson Civic Center.
CPHS Holds Free Health FairThe College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences’ annual Health Fair, held on March 23, 2010, featured a variety of free health screenings, including blood glucose, cholesterol, blood pressure, bone density, body fat analysis and skincare analysis. The fair was sponsored by Campbell’s first-year pharmacy students and the Academy of Student Pharmacists organization.
N.C. Biotech awards grant to CPHSA grant in the amount of $197,981 from the North Carolina Biotechnology Center to Campbell University’s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences will be used to establish a Center for the Analysis of Pharmaceutical Biomaterials. The grant makes possible the purchase of state-of-the-art analysis instruments that will allow researchers to perform complete physical and chemical characterization of active pharmaceutical ingredients, inactive ingredients and dosage forms to evaluate products, both investigative and commercial, for safety and effectiveness for animal and human use.
Peeler certified as Fund Raising ExecutiveJodi S. Peeler, Assistant Dean of External Relations for the Campbell University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, has recently received the Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) designation. Peeler joins over 5,400 professionals worldwide who have met a series of standards set by the CFRE organization which include tenure in the profession, education, demonstrated fundraising achievement and a commitment to service to nonprofit organizations.

The traditional pharmacists’ symbol, the mortar and pestle, has been redesigned to include the serpent, one of the most pervasive symbols in medicine.
College of Pharmacy scores 100 percent passage on national board examsBuies Creek, N.C.—The Campbell University College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences posted a 100 percent passage rate on the 2009 North American Pharmacy Licensure Exam developed by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy. A total of 90 graduates took the exam between May 1 and August 31.
